MATT’s Poll: The Most Accurate in Mexican Political History?

Imagine doing a poll in a country where one-fourth of the voters don’t have a phone. Imagine that most of those voters live in remote rural areas where face-to-face interviews are impractical and costly. Imagine personally interviewing 116,000 voters in 300 precincts in every state in the nation under these conditions 3 times. Imagine getting it right. Impossible? Not if you’re MATT.org.

Obrador - PRD - 12,782,451 votes

Madrazo - PRI - 10,033,284 votes

Calderon - PAN - 9,717,398 votes

There are 2,977,603 million of indecisive voters.
3% of the total sample (aprox. 1,500,000 votes) are for the other two candidates.
Why Such a Poll?

Because its detail is likely to reveal some interesting new information as well as a big surprise. So far, 2 rounds of polling have been completed. 116,000 personal interviews have been conducted.
Who conducted the poll?

MATT members shared the results of their study conducted by HB Consultores, a consulting firm founded in 2002, specializing in the design and monitoring of persuasion strategies.
What did MATT Find?

All the other polls are flawed because of their methodology. While it’s true that socialist Manuel Lopez Obrador is in the lead, the race isn’t nearly as close as the pundits are predicting. And because our polls are more detailed and accurate, we found that Roberto Madrazo, the centrist and PRI candidate, and Felipe Calderón, the conservative PAN candidate, are in a virtual tie.
So What Does This Mean?

Obrador may win. But if he loses, it will be to Roberto Madrazo, not Calderón. For 3 reasons:

1. All other polls are under-sampling the rural voter, who traditionally votes PRI. These voters are harder to poll, so their opinions are not being given their due importance.
2. Over 3 million voters are still undecided. The undecided vote may go to Madrazo simply because voters will vote the party and not the candidate. Why? Because most of their preferred local candidates belong to the PRI and voters in Mexico vote straight ticket and up ballot.
3. Voter turnout will be the lowest in recent history due to greater voter apathy. Plus over 10 million eligible voters will not show up. Why? They are living in the USA. Their voices will remain silent during this election.

The above variables are formidable and they all favor the PRI. So it’s going to be a 3-horse race. For the first time Mexico is going to be in a dilemma. Because the closer the race, the more their democratic institutions will be tested. A case in point: the 2000 presidential elections in the U.S., which came down to a single vote in the Supreme Court. The American people honored this decision. Hopefully, the real winner in this close race will be Mexico’s democracy.
